The Civilian Conservation
Corps Company 3791 was located in Arkansas County, just 1 mile southeast of
the famous old civil war town of St. Charles, Arkansas. Arkansas County is one of the state’s
oldest and most historic counties. The
CCC camp was established during the period of expansion of the CCC known as
the Fifth Period. It was assigned to
the task of building a waterfowl refuge under the direction of the U.S Bureau
of Biological Survey. The CCC camp
had its birth on the night of June 25th, 1935. On June 26th, the first tent, a supply
tent, for 15 men was set up on “Deane Hill”.
Company 3791 carried on one of the largest and well-rounded work
programs in the district. It was one
of the few CCC camps owning and operating a complete saw mill. The camp was 242 strong and was the
largest in its history. |
